One of the first steps is to identify your blockages. Blockages can be caused by many different circumstances or emotions. Some of the most common include:
Fear
Anxiety
Being around negative/toxic people
Being confined to a toxic/negative space
Stress
Traumatic past events
Past life events
People wishing ill on you/curses/hexes
Negative spirit attachments
Self-doubt and negative self-talk
When we are exposed to these in the extreme, or for long periods of time, these can take root in our energetic selves and cause blockages. These blockages can have a detrimental effect on our whole selves, manifesting in physical, mental, and emotional symptoms. There are many different ways in which you can begin to identify these blocks, where they have come from, and how they may be affecting your energy.
Shadow Work
Shadow work has become increasingly popular in recent years. In shadow work we seek to explore, understand, and integrate the ‘darker’ (or shadow) aspects of ourselves into our whole, in order to find balance and peace. This involves facing our fears and those situations which may have given rise to the negativity, which in turn has caused blockages in our self, and accepting them so we can heal from them. You can buy many different shadow workbooks, or access worksheets online to help you get started on your own shadow work journey.
Automatic Writing
Automatic writing is the art of letting your subconscious take over the pen and allowing your thoughts and feelings flow. This requires you to switch off and enter a meditative state, which can be difficult. If you do wish to try it, simply relax your mind and focus on your intent; maybe you wish to focus on a specific event, or maybe you have a physical pain or similar and wish to know whether this could be associated with an energy block? Focus on this intent, and then let the pen go! Stop when you feel ready and read back what you have written and see what insights have been recorded.
Therapy
Therapy is a well known practice which involves talking to a licensed professional to help uncover and work through thoughts, emotions, and events which may have had a negative impact and be holding you back. Whilst therapy can be costly, it is one I have engaged with and highly recommend.
Body Scanning
Body scanning is a technique which involves scanning our aura/chakras/energy field to identify blockages. Usually this is done by connecting with your energy, and then passing your hands down your body (slightly above your body) and feelings for any areas where the energy feels different or 'off'. This can feel different for different people; for me personally, it feels as though the energy suddenly becomes heavier, like it is stuck. Many people who practice this like to correspond this with the chakras and specifically focus on scanning over the seven main energy centres of the body.
Muscle Testing (Applied Kinesiology)
Muscle testing is the act of using our physical body to help determine where blockages may lie. It is based on the theory that certain memories, etc., will trigger a reaction in our bodies by either weakening it or strengthening it. So, when we think of something positive our body will strengthen, but when we think of or experience something negative, our bodies will weaken.
The easiest muscle testing exercise recommended for beginners is called the ‘swaying’ test. Stand upright, relax your body, and clear. Think on a particular event, emotion, etc., and just take note of how your body reacts to it (it will usually take a few seconds of focusing on this event/emotion/etc., for your body to react). If your body ‘recoils’, by swaying backwards slightly, then you still harbour negativity associated with this event, emotion, etc. If your body does not react, then you are neutral towards it, and if you find yourself swaying slightly forwards, then it is seen as positive.
Guided Meditation
Guided meditations can be used for almost anything; to help you relax, bring comfort, increase confidence, creativity, etc. They can also be used to help you identify and understand blockages, or negative thoughts patterns and such which may be affecting you. If not a guided meditation , then meditation in general can help you quieten your mind enough to be able to start to explore where blockages may be present or coming from.
Pendulum Use
You can use a pendulum to help you uncover blockages in your energy. There are a couple of ways in which you can do this:
Take your pendulum and focus on a situation or event which has occurred, for example, a breakup with a former partner. As the pendulum ‘am I still harbouring blockages or negative energy from this event?’ and let the pendulum tell you yes or no.
The second technique is great for understanding directly where in your energy field these blockages may reside. Rather than trying to perform this on your physical body, I find it easier to draw the outline of your body on a piece of paper, and then breathing on the paper. Breath is energy, and by doing this you are creating an energetic link with the paper, allowing this drawing to represent your own physical body. Now, starting at the top of the head, move the pendulum slowly down the figure. If you notice the pendulum moving erratically or different from how it usually swings, then this is indicative of a blockage in this area. It can be especially helpful to focus on the locations of the 7 main chakras and whether there are any blockages in those areas.
When Investigating Blockages, Remember...
This is not an easy process. There may be some memories which are still too painful to recount or may dredge up more negativity. If in doubt, stop, and seek a medical professional to guide you through this process.
If are going to use the techniques above (or any other technique out there) then be kind to yourself. Set aside a specific time where you can just focus on yourself without distraction, in an environment you feel safe in, and make sure you have something to ground and comfort you after. This may be meditating, treating yourself to a fancy bar of chocolate or a long, hot bath, or even an invigorating gym session! Whatever brings you joy and comfort is ideal to indulge in after such work.
