In order to be able to heal your own energy, it is best to spend some time connecting with your own, subtle internal energy. Through doing so, you will begin to understand how it feels, which will better enable you to recognise when there are blockages and where these blockages are located. It also helps heighten your awareness and your general sensitivity to energy, which will aid you in being able to sense, read, and heal the energy of others and your environment.
Below are just a few ways in which you can start becoming aligned with your own personal energy.
Breathwork
Breath is considered the bridge between body, mind, and spirit, and is one of the most direct ways to access and influence energy flow. Breath carries prana (life force); breath is energy itself. By focusing on our breath, we can experience and influence the energy of the body.
One of my favourite exercises is one which I learned from the healer Parita Shah and can be found on her website (and I highly recommend you check out her website - https://paritashahhealing.com/). For this exercise we will be breathing into the Hara, or the Lower Dantian.
The Hara (Japanese), also known as the Lower Dantian in traditional Chinese medicine (Dantian is translated to Tanden in Japanese so you may see these used interchangeably), is at its simplest, a powerful energy centre within the body. There is a lot more to it than that, and working with it is a key part of their respective spiritual practices. But for the purposes of getting your started, we will stick with the simple approach.
Close your eyes and prepare for meditation. Focus on your breath, and when you feel ready, follow your inhale as it enters your body. Feel it as it enters your nose and travels down your throat, through your chest, and down into the Hara. Hold your breath for a moment, and just observe your energy. On the exhale, see this energy flowing from your hara and throughout your body. On the next inhale, repeat.
Meditation can be difficult for those who aren't used to it, but even just practicing a few minutes a day can make a huge difference.
Meridians
Meridians are energy pathways used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to explain how qi (pronounced chee, meaning life force energy) flows through the body. These invisible channels connect various parts of the body, ensuring balance and harmony between organs, emotions, and physical systems.
Meridians are part of the body’s energetic anatomy. Similar to the way blood vessels carry blood, meridians carry energy throughout the body. There are 12 primary meridians, each associated with a major organ system, and several extraordinary meridians that act as reservoirs and regulators of energy. Each of these meridians follows a specific path across the body and influences not only physical organs but also emotional and energetic states.
Each meridian:
Is linked to a specific organ (e.g., Lung, Heart, Liver)
Has a paired yin or yang classification
Has a pathway that runs along the surface of the body and through deeper tissues
Contains acupoints—key locations where energy can be accessed and influenced
Below is an image which will give you an idea as to the different meridians and their pathways through the body. You can connect with these meridians to help you feel this flow of energy around your body. You can simply use your breath, by inhaling and visualising the energy moving through each meridian, or you can visualise a white light entering your body and travelling through the different meridians. Meridians are great to build a working knowledge of if you are interested in acupuncture or EFT tapping as an energy healing method.
,Qi Gong has roots stretching back over 4,000 years and evolved alongside Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Chinese medicine. It incorporates physical movements to aid us in cultivating and sending qi (energy) throughout the body. 'Qi' means 'subtle breath' or 'vital energy', whilst 'gong' means 'skill cultivated through practice'. There are many different styles of qi gong, and you may find that one particular move is called a completely different name depending on the style you practice. However, I personally find that qi gong is a fantastic way to connect with your energy and feel it flowing through your body. There is a lot more to it than just performing some movements and it has a rich history and lore, so I do recommend that you find someone to teach it to you; I was lucky enough to find a teacher in London from whom I learned the basics from.
There are many different teachers available, but if you are looking for something online, then I recommend One Commune; they offer a free, six day course looking at some of the foundational qi gong movements which I personally feel provides a great introduction!
Body scanning is the art of 'scanning' your energy to try and gain impressions as to its current state and where there may be blockages. This exercise takes a bit of practice, but is worth dedicated yourself to. You can use it to scan your own energy, or use it to scan others which is very helpful if you are planning on performing energy healing on others.
Start by rubbing your hands together and feeling the energy build within your palms. Slowly pull your hands apart slightly - you should still feel this energy buzzing in your palms.
Next, starting at the top of your head, bring your hands down slowly over your body, a couple of centimetres away from your skin. I like to visualise my hands as one of those scanning wands like they use at airports and such, which will 'go off' when it encounters negative energy or blockages. You are looking for any changes in the energy as you bring your hands down. For example, when I encounter a blockage, the energy feels like a 'jolt'; it feels heavy, or spiky compared to the rest of my body. I can then use this information to help tailor a healing to work on that particular area. I personally work with the chakras, so will specifically scan the chakra points looking for blockages, but you may wish to work with another system.
Again, this method takes a bit of practice to first understand what your energy feels like, and then what blockages feel like. If at first you don't feel anything then don't give up; keep trying little and often until you start to sense it.
