Getting Started: A Checklist

It can be overwhelming when you want to get started with something new; where do you start, what do you need to do before you start practicing? Well, below is a helpful list for you to get going. This is just a guideline; you may find that some steps you are competent in, there may be some that you have never heard of before, and there may be some which don't appeal to you! Use this to start defining your own journey into energy healing.

1. Understand And Set Your Intention & Choose Your Healing Method

First, you need to clarify your purpose for starting this journey. Are you feeling stuck, unmotivated, or without purpose? Is there something specific that is holding you back? Do you wish to learn more about the application of energy healing itself to use on yourself, or others? Or perhaps you are in a place of stability and contentment with your life and are looking to enhance it? You may decide to meditate, journal, perform a divination, use dreamwork, or any other method which can aid with inner reflection to help you understand and set your intuition. Make sure you record your goals to help keep them in mind - you may even wish to create a vision board or similar to help motivate you. Remember that this is your journey, and so you can use any tool at your disposal.

Once you have determined your intention, you can use this to help decide which healing method you should use. For example if you have a specific memory you wish to heal from, then you could use EFT tapping. If you wish to rid yourself of a negative trait such as lying, maybe you wish to work with your throat chakra. Or perhaps you want to be able to heal others and wish to try Reiki?

2. Create Your Healing Environment

When engaging in healing, you want to make sure you have a safe space to do it in. At the bare minimum, make sure it is somewhere private where you won't be disturbed. Otherwise, think about what makes you feel calm and relaxed; maybe it is candlelight, maybe you wish to burn some lavender oil, play some meditation music, or dress in something loose and comfortable - maybe even your pyjamas!

3. Preparing Yourself

There are several activities you can perform to help prepare yourself for healing. These include:
  • Grounding and centering: Helping you to find balance within yourself, and be present in the moment.
  • Meditation: To help clear your mind
  • Cleansing yourself: To help remove any negative energies from yourself
  • Cleansing your space: To help remove negative energies from your space

4. Connecting With Your Energy

Once you feel ready, connect with your own energy. I would advise that you do this before you perform any method of healing energy. By connecting with your own energy, you can recognise any blockages you may have not noticed before and wish to incorporate into your healing, and you can also gauge how you feel after the healing compared to how you felt before it.

5. Perform Your Energy Healing

Now it is time to perform your energy healing! How you do this will depend on the method you are using, so I can't go into specifics here. But relax, engage in your chosen practice, and let the energy flow!

6. Winding Down

Once you have completed your energy healing, it is time to wind down. Remember to take it easy; I find that most times after energy healing I feel revitalised, but also very, very relaxed. The last thing you want to be doing is rushing off to get a train or having to hop into an hour long meeting! Make sure you drink plenty of water, and allow yourself to take it slow for a bit. Great exercises to perform after an energy healing session include:

  • Connecting with your energy (to see if there are any differences now you have completed your healing)
  • Grounding and centering (to rid yourself of any excess energy)
  • Protection (to make sure that your energy is protected from negativity moving forward)
  • Journalling (to record any impressions or thoughts about the session)
  • Prayer (to say thank you to the universal energy/qi/etc., for aiding you in your healing)
