Energy healing is an ancient and holistic approach to wellness that focuses on the subtle energy systems of the body to restore balance, promote healing, and support overall wellbeing. Though often misunderstood or seen as 'mystical', energy healing is deeply rooted in the traditions of many cultures and is gaining renewed attention in modern times.
The All Important Disclaimer
Energy healing IS NOT and SHOULD NOT be used as a substitute for scientific medical care. All of the practices listed on this website SHOULD NOT be used in place of scientific medical care. Whilst symptoms of energy blockages can manifest as physical or mental symptoms, you should ALWAYS consult a doctor or specialist care provider if these arise.
Some practices MAY NOT be recommended for those with high blood pressure, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, etc., so again ALWAYS consult with a medical professional before undertaking them.
What Is Energy Healing?
Energy healing is based on the idea that the human body is made up of not only the physical structures—muscles, organs, bones, etc.,— but also a complex network of energy. This energy, sometimes referred to as life force, chi, prana, or universal energy, flows through the body.
When this energy is balanced and free-flowing, we feel physically, emotionally, and mentally balanced and happy. But when it becomes blocked, stagnant, or depleted, it can manifest as pain, illness, stress, or emotional imbalance. Energy healing techniques aim to remove these blockages, recharge the system, and help the body heal itself more effectively.
Why Practice Energy Healing?
As we have noted, blockages in our energy can give rise to many negative symptoms. Many people tend to think of their physical body as something separate from their mental selves and their emotional selves. Similarly, it can be easy to think of our energetic bodies as something separate from our physical, mental, and emotional selves. This is not the case; all of our states of being are intrinsically connected. For example, when I am going through a prolonged period of stress (often thanks to my day job), I will develop a twitch under my eye - an example of my mental state affecting my physical state. In the same vein, our energy can affect our other states of being.
Energy healing can help us remove those blockages and prevent them from manifesting as physical/mental/emotional symptoms. As well as encouraging healing, focusing on our energetic selves can bring peace, harmony, confidence, and help us feel a deeper connection to the people and the world around us.
A Brief History of Energy Healing
Energy healing isn't new—it has been practiced for thousands of years across many different cultures and spiritual systems. Here are a few key examples:
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long recognized the importance of qi (chi) (life energy) and uses practices like acupuncture, tai chi, and qi gong to move and balance it. Purported to be over 2,500 years old, one of its most influential texts - Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperors Inner Canon) - was written around 200 BCE.
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, describes prana as the vital force, and healing often involves aligning the chakras and using breath (pranayama), herbs, and lifestyle practices. It is deeply rooted in the Vedic tradition, with its foundational ideas appearing in the Atharva Veda - one of the four sacred Vedic texts - written around 1500 BCE.
Reiki, developed in Japan in the early 20th century, involves chaneling universal energy through the hands to support healing and relaxation. There are many different types of Reiki, but the most popular is Usui Reiki. It was founded by Mikao Usui following a 21 day meditation and fast during a spiritual retreat on Mount Kurama.
These systems, while different in their methods, share a common belief: when energy is in harmony, the body and mind are in balance.
We can also work with Angels, trees, crystals, sound, spirits, and other elements to facilitate energy healing.
Energy Healing in the Modern World
One of my main interests is taking these ancient practices, and understanding how we can work with them in this modern world. Unfortunately very few of us have the time to go on a 21 day retreat - some of us struggle to find even just an hour in the day to focus on ourselves! As such, I always try to make everything I do accessible to everyone, focusing on developing practices that you can incorporate into your everyday life.
Energy work is becoming more mainstream; magazines with articles on how to deal with your toxic ex, or stickers touting 'good vibes only' being ready available. However, this barely scratches the surface of what we can achieve if we work with our own energy. With energy healing having such a rich history, there is so much to learn and try, and many different opportunities for you to find a system which works for you.
